A trip to Quintana Roo is not complete
without a trip to Chichen-itza. It was quite a bus ride getting there,
but worth it!. Just seeing the pyramid was a thrill. It dominates all of
the other structures around. It is designed to mirror their calendar. It's
built with nine large levels, each divided in half by the stairways, creating
18 terraces on each side - the number of months. Their are 91 steps on
each staircase, plus one onto the temple making 365, the number of days.
The detail goes on and on, but you get the idea.
The people climbing up the sunny side are using a chain for balance - there
isn't a chain on the shady side, but it was ninety-someting degrees out
their and the stairs weren't that steep.
